OUGD503 SB1 - Secret 7" - The Lyrics & Final Choices

For the initial stage of my idea generation in order to help the decision of which two tracks will be taken in to the designing stage I thought it would be beneficial to look at the lyrics for each of the songs in oder to give inspiration...

Churches - Clearest Blue

Light, it's all over us
Like it always was
Like it always was

Shape by the clearest blue

But it's not enough

It's not enough, not enough

Just another time we're caught inside

Every open eye

Holding on tightly to the sides

Never quite learning why

You'll meet me, you'll meet me

You'll meet me halfway

Whenever I feel it coming on

You can be well aware

If ever I try to push you away

You can just keep me there

So please say you'll meet me

Meet me halfway

Tied to the shifting ground

Like I always was

Like I always was

You, were the perfect star

But it's not enough, it's not enough

Not enough, not enough

Just another time that I go down

But you were keeping up

Holding to a hope you undermined

Never to be reversed

Just another time we're caught inside

Every open eye

Holding on tightly to the sides

Never quite learning why

Whenever I feel it coming on

You can be well aware

If ever I try to push you away

You can just keep me tell me

Tell me tell me, you'll meet me

Tell me tell me, you'll keep me

Tell me tell me, you'll meet me

Will you meet me more than halfway

Shape by the clearest blue

Shape by the clearest blue

Etta James - At Last

At last

My love has come along

My lonely days are over

And life is like a song

Oh yeah yeah

At last

The skies above are blue

My heart was wrapped up in clover

The night I looked at you

I found a dream, that I could speak to

A dream that I can call my own

I found a thrill to press my cheek to

A thrill that I have never known

Oh yeah yeah

You smiled, you smiled

Oh and then the spell was cast

And here we are in heaven

for you are mine...

At Last

Jack Garratt - Worry

My nights are broken up by the sounds of women I’ll never meet
And when my eyes are closed I can start to feel you staring at me
The right side of my bed has always left me feeling stuck in between (Oh, oh, oh, oh)
Everything I know and all the lies I tell myself so I can sleep

Pick apart the pieces you left

Don’t you worry about it, don’t you worry about it

Try and give yourself some rest

And let me worry about it, let me worry about it

You came around to say that you’ve been away, like I hadn’t known

As if I don’t wake up every single day not seeing you go

As if this moon of ours only shines a half to make me feel whole

As if I haven’t felt your breath in every step I take when the wind blows

Pick apart the pieces you left

Don’t you worry about it, don’t you worry about it

Try and give yourself some rest

And let me worry about it, let me worry about it

[x2]

(Oh, oh, oh, oh) (worry)

(Oh, oh, oh, oh) (worry)

(Oh, oh, oh, oh) (worry)

(Oh, oh, oh, oh) (worry)

(Oh, oh, oh, oh) (worry)

(Oh, oh, oh, oh) (worry)
(Oh, oh, oh, oh) (worry)

Pick apart the pieces you left

Don’t you worry about it, don’t you worry about it

Try and give yourself some rest

And let me worry about it, let me worry about it

(Worry) (Worry)

(Worry) (Don’t you worry)

The Jam - Art School

Anything that you wanna do, anyplace that you wanna go
Don't need permission for everything that you want
Any taste that you feel is right
Wear any clothes just as long as they're bright
Say what you want, 'cos this is a new art school
Do what you want if it takes your mind
Better do it now, 'cos you won't have time
And never worry if people laugh at you
The fools only laugh 'cos they envy you
Time is motion and the hands are fast
Young words are mumbled, they don't always last
It's up to us to be sure they understand
Who makes the rules that make people select
Who is to judge that your ways are correct
The media as watchdog is absolute shit
The TV telling you what to think
Anything that you wanna do, anyplace that you wanna go
Don't need permission for everything that you want
Any taste that you feel is right
Wear any clothes just as long as they're bright
Say what you want,
'cos this is a new art school
Do what you want, 'cos this is the new art school

John Lennon - Imagine

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try

No hell below us

Above us only sky

Imagine all the people

Living for today...

Imagine there's no countries

It isn't hard to do

Nothing to kill or die for

And no religion too

Imagine all the people

Living life in peace...

You may say I'm a dreamer

But I'm not the only one

I hope someday you'll join us

And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions

I wonder if you can

No need for greed or hunger

A brotherhood of man

Imagine all the people

Sharing all the world...

You may say I'm a dreamer

But I'm not the only one

I hope someday you'll join us

And the world will live as one

Max Richter - Dream 3

As dream three by Max Richter is a completely instrumental classical piece there will be no lyrics from which a conceptual idea can be generated, meaning the concept generation will have to come from instinct when listening to the song.

Tame Impala - The Less I Know The Better

"The Less I Know The Better"

Someone said they left together
I ran out the door to get her
She was holding hands with Trevor
Not the greatest feeling ever
Said, "Pull yourself together
You should try your luck with Heather"
Then I heard they slept together
Oh, the less I know the better
The less I know the better

Oh my love, can't you see yourself by my side
No surprise when you're on his shoulder like every night
Oh my love, can't you see that you're on my mind
Don't suppose we could convince your lover to change his mind
So goodbye

She said, "It's not now or never
Wait 10 years, we'll be together"
I said, "Better late than never
Just don't make me wait forever"
Don't make me wait forever
Don't make me wait forever

Oh my love, can't you see yourself by my side?
I don't suppose you could convince your lover to change his mind

I was doing fine without ya
'Til I saw your face, now I can't erase
Giving in to all his bullshit
Is this what you want, is this who you are?
I was doing fine without ya
'Til I saw your eyes turn away from mine
Oh, sweet darling, where he wants you
Said, "Come on Superman, say your stupid line"
Said, "Come on Superman, say your stupid line"
Said, "Come on Superman, say your stupid line"

After reviewing the song lyrics and listening to them I have come to the final decision of which two tracks will be taken forward in to the designing stage...

The first choice is Max Richter - Dream 3! The reason behind choosing this track to take forward in to the designing stage is that this is the first track that Secret 7" have ever included of which is fully instrumental and contains no lyrics at all. This interested me into using this song as it means that all contextual ideas used in the generation stage will have to come from an extended amount of research in to the song and its meanings and furthermore from what the song actually implies when I listen to it rather than just taking a half hearted contextual concept from lyrics.

Furthermore the second track that I wanted to take forward in to the designing stage is Jack Garrett - Worry As I have picked the first track on the basis of a song in which I think my progression as a designer will benefit from the completion of, for the second song I decided instead to choose the track of which I prefer least musically, in order to see if this disconnection from myself and the music. I believe that due to the fact that the music isn't what I enjoy or usually listen to maybe my mind will be open to more possibilities due to having no preconceptions.

OUGD503 SB1 - Disposable Society - Briefing

For another of the small briefs necessary to complete responsive I decided that I will contribute and complete the brief "Disposable Society" that is being set and ultimately exhibitioner by 'Goat Collective' a collective of young artists that multiple different courses of the university level six programs.

The deadline for the submission of this brief is the 20th February so this doesn't give me too much time to complete the brief but as this is a very small brief work level while It will me more than enough times to actually complete my submission.

The Goat Collective came in to our studio to do a presentation firstly about themselves as a collective but also about this exhibition as a whole and the idea grasped my attention really quickly. I am really interested in this brief as a lot of the work I complete is a customer to designer highly brief led work where we are set a certain objective to complete such as a branding exercise or a publication and we have creative control about the aesthetic but not so much the content.
This brief end exhibition caught my eye as instead of standing in the same sector as earlier mentioned it instead is an example of a brief in which we are given a general theme to abide by but are left with all the creative control over the content and aesthetics and furthermore it is the first real chance in which I have been able to complete a brief in which we are using graphic design to make an ethical change. This ethically led graphic design is something that I am really interested in but never really get as much chance to complete and so forth I am really excited to be completing it.

OUGD503 SB1 - Secret 7" - The Rules & Monotype

Below is a list a rules and guidelines set by the Secret 7" organisation that our submissions should follow...

1. Your design must not include the artist’s name or the song title
2. Concentrate your design on what will be the front, only this will be visible in the exhibition
3. Dimensions should be 184mm x 184mm, with a 3mm bleed all the way around. That’s 190mm x 190mm
in total. The bleed won’t be visible, so bear that in mind

4. Your le must be produced in CMYK so it’s set-up to be printed. Any PMS specials will be converted. Metallic or uorescent inks cannot be reproduced
5. Your le must be 300dpi
6. Your le must be saved as either a Tiff, JPEG or PDF
7. Do try and reduce the size of your le as much as possible - 10 MB maximum
8. You can submit a sleeve design for as many of our tracks as you like, and more than one for each track
9. You must have until 23:59 GMT on 2 March 2016 to upload your designs. Late submission will not be accepted. We advise that you don’t wait till the last few minutes to upload, as the site will be busy
10. Last but certainly not least - if we email you with the good news that you’ve made it into the show please keep it a secret. It makes for a much better project!

We ask for all your details when you submit a design so that we can shout about all our designers once our sale day has passed and the secrets are out.

Note: design inspiration to be 140 characters (including spaces) or less. MS Word count does not include spaces so twitter is the best way to check this. Avoid unusual characters. And remember, your artwork is priority. Keep the description simple.

Furthermore while looking through the guidelines set by Secret 7" I also discovered that in conjunction with the submissions the type foundry Monotype have got involved with the project, allowing everyone who submits work for Secret 7" to have access to their type libraries vastly broadening the range of typefaces that I can use in the completion of briefs and giving us access to a wide variety of fonts of which we would not be able to afford to use in a normal context as they are allowing the use of them for free in the completion of Secret 7" briefs.

OUGD503 SB1 - Secret 7" - Time Management

As a problem that has been encountered throughout the completion of my brief so far has been my time management and planning of how the briefs are broken down and completed. To combat this in the completion of these two Secret 7" I am going to rigorously plan the design stage of the project and stick to the plan in order to see how well a project can go when planned and executed precisely.

Furthermore the reason for completing two of the secret seven briefs is that with the experimentation in to time management and planning above I would also like to discover my capabilities completing a small brief but when set to two different time scales, in order to discover my capabilities when set to two different time scale limitations.
As this time management requires some major planning in to the execution here I will outline the exact plans for both of the album cover of which I will stick to thoroughly.
