OUGD504 Studio Brief 01 - Study Task 01 - My Design Process

To start off the brief were were given a study task to complete of which would further our knowledge on the subject of "The Design Process".

We started off this study task by being told to think about the design process and now having thought into it do some research via the internet and books to discover well known examples of the process of design and to see what these encompass and then also to think about how we like to design aswell and then to adapt these things we had looked at into our own design process.

I decided to look at a publication made by RevolverRevolver a Derby based graphic design agency as they had released a digital version of the design process of which they follow when designing any piece of work as my inspiration and then I first decided to create a mind map of which I tried to include every aspect of the design process so that I could outline what I already knew and what I needed to learn more about. I then decided to group these aspects in after a lot of thought one of five all encompassing stages to the design process, "The 5 D's Of Design".

We were then informed that we were to get into group and discuss together now instead of individually so see if we could improve on what we had already come up with on our own and were now asked to yet again list all of the possible parts of a process of design that we could encounter during a project and so we mind mapped this...

After mind mapping all of the possible things that happen during the process of designing something we decided that we would use the method that I made to display all of the aspects in specific stages and below is an image of the completed process;

We decided to make the process follow what we called the five D's of design and these are DEFINE, DISCOVER, DESIGN, DEVELOP and DELIVER as we believed that all of the aspects of a design process that we outlined can be classed under. The process work like a cycle as you start at the start point and the go around the cycle in order and after every stage answer the question WHY? because we believed if you can confidently answer the why question then the design decision you've made is appropriate and then after the why? stage return to the next process step remembering to go back to the why? after every step. We believed it was best to show the process as a never ending cycle and not a linear process as we believed that when you follow all of the steps of the process you may get to the end stage of evaluating the end product with the initial brief/findings you may have to go back to the the project and make a change therefore starting the cycle again.

Due to the fact that it was me out of my group of which cam up with this design process as I developed it from the way that I complete a brief I decided that I will be taking this format and process forward into the creation of my design process leaflet.
