OUGD405 Evaluation

EVALUATION

This module of work has been overall very helpful in my belief as all of the units have taught me something different of which I wasn’t used to but none the less all equally as valuable to my learning process.
I really enjoyed the first brief as it was left almost entirely open to us and therefore allowed for a lot of variation in the possibilities for ideas to take forward and therefore caused the creative side of me to start flowing.
The second unit I found very helpful as it further developed a side to be of which I believe is quite a lot behind the designing and practical side of me of which is research based work it helped me to develop the process I go through when getting research to base my work on and to manage my own time when research as we were left free to do this and weren’t guided through it.
The third unit I thoroughly enjoyed as this brief gave me an insight into a section of graphics design of which I am very much interested in but have never got to have a good go at in the past, and opened my eyes to new processes, this side to graphic design being an editorial side.
Finally the last unit also gave me an insight into another side of graphics of which was a look into branding for companies this was helpful as it helped me get an insight into a world of graphic design I had never looked into of which was branding and got me started on this side as an upcoming unit we will do for PPP will be branding so this may have prepared me.
Overall this whole module was helpful as I believe all of the brief helped me farther develop an area of graphic design of which I am not used to taking part in.

Deliverables

A clearly defined resolution(s) to the problem in an appropriate media and format.
Two min presentation that clearly communicates your effective solution.

For this unit we were asked to find a problem from our research and the invent a solution to the problem we picked and then we were to create the packaging for the solution to the problem. I chose to solve the problem that online there is not really a social network solely for skateboarders where skateboarders across the world could share information with each other about skating, such as different spots in each town and etc. So therefore that packaging that I would be design for said website was that I would design the branding identity for the company that own the website. We were then asked to re-write the brief for this unit to reflect the project we had decided to take on so now my brief was to design a fully branding identity for said company that must include a minimum of A logo for the company, a header including the logo and additional text, branding identity guidelines such as the font family that the company used and the colour palette that they use too and finally include applications for the branding with a minimum of a business card and a mock web page.

To start everything off I brainstormed via a mind map all of the parts and aspects of the branding identity and as I believed it is the most crucial and important part to the branding identity I decided to start with and spend the most time on the logo. I started off by drawing out a lot of different variations of possible logos that I could use for the branding identity, after drawing out as many possible variations as I could do the next job was to choose which of these I would take further. After discussions with my peers and tutor through crits and informal chats I decided that I would take the second down on the right to the next stage. Next I scanned in the drawn version of the logo, uploaded it into illustrator and then used the pen tools to draw shapes and the pathfinder to join the shapes together. After I had finish doing this I finished off the logo with the accompanying text, I decided to use Helvetica Neue Ultra Light. I decided to do this as when placed next the thick garish logo any other type I chose looked silly and I chose ultra light as I thought that the contrast to the logo worked very well. The accompanying text read "STYLE.KNOWLEDGE.ART.TALENT.EXPRESSION" this being the company name.

I then got a stock image of which is designed in a way that you can use it to display branding and used photoshop to photoshop the branding on to practical items such as business cards, mock letters, note pads and stationary. I also designed a t-shirt with a use of the logo and made it in colour variations of black, white and gold logo on black and white t-shirts and therefore my three colours for my colour pallet were chosen. I decided to use a gold colour with my black and white theme as I believe it worked well as I wanted to add an almost classier feel to the whole aesthetic. I then put together a letter headed sheet with the branding guidelines about font family choice and colour palette. finally I used a picture of an existing social media site and photoshopped it to mock up a webpage of what the website may look like with the branding used.

In the final crit the response to my logo was brilliant everyone liked it and thought that it was very well put together, people questioned the reason behind making a font like I did when I said I wanted it to look like a company internationally and not just like a british company, but when I explained the trends in the skateboarding market with simple minimalist fonts and logos being primarily used by british companies and rather the international market is more suited to the more garish fonts like I ended up making.

For this brief we were asked to take the research from the second uni that we had collected and to put together a selection of the research into a publication of our choice of which would be put together by a machine of industry standard of which not only prints the publication for you but also folds and staples it to allowing the easy manufacture of multiple publications very easily. The only restrictions to the publication was it needed to include at least five double page spreads and then a front on a back totalling a minimum of 12 pages, there was an upper maximum of 20 pages and it had to include a multiple of four pages.

For this brief above are four different prevailing existing skateboarding magazines that I looked at as research for my publication although I was intending to create something a little different to this I looked at these as they gave me an insight into the current skateboarding magazine market. There are two main aesthetics of which I can see the magazines going towards of which are they either go for a very messy chaotic organisation no use of order and placement or they go for a very minimalistic and simple design. As I had already decided that I was going to be making a small A5 sized booklet size publication I decided that the best way to ensure I can include all of my research that I wanted by making a publication with a lot of pages and therefore allowing me to keep the amount of information to a minimal on each page as I wanted my publication to follow the non-cluttered minimal side. I decided to look at these article as I wanted to keep my magazine in keeping with these as the articles usually comprise of minimal colour throughout the article design and this contrasts with the high colour nature of the images that are the focus of the article. The choice of font and colour in the pre-existing articles Is all down to the nature of the team or company it is about giving no set guidelines to follow in the text used on the articles and finally a high image to text ratio is features in all of these articles as although the text is important the feature of a magazine of this style is always the image.

For this brief we were told that there had to be a minimum of five double page spreads with an additional front and back meaning a minimum of 12 pages and we were also told that there was an upper limit of 20 pages and finally the booklet had to contain a multiple of four pages. Due to the nature of the publication I was creating and the fact that I wanted it to be a small booklet sized book that I would use create a publication with 20 pages so that I could keep the booklet at A5 size and still get enough information into the booklet without over-crowding each page with information. At first I created a mock booklet to help me with working out how many pages I would need and to help work out where I would place image and text in the publication. I decided that I would use a six column structure for the booklet as this allowed my to have a lot of customisation possibilities while still using a defined structure. I started by creating the base background for each of the pages of the booklet I added border to each page just to add a little something to each of the pages, I chose to put this in a pastel pink colour. Next I added in around three images to each left side page and then around three pieces of my information to each of the right side pages. I also added specialised pages one double spread of these being a statistics section and another double page including the single words from my research, to be in-keeping with the overall aesthetic I coloured all of these in the same pastel pink colour, I did this because I believe in a skate article the emphasis should be on the images in the article and these said pictures are very bright the majority of the time so I chose to use the pastel pink as I believe this added a  certain simplicity to the booklet and didn't take the concentration off the images. I finished off the publication off with the text information, I chose to use Bebas Kai as my font as I believe the slab style capitalised font added to the legibility of the text and worked well with the modern simplistic feel I was going for. Finally I added the title to the front page in the same font and colour to be in-keeping with the rest of the booklet. I kept everything in the publication centralised as this worked with the modern feel I wanted from the work.

I decided to print the booklet on paper of which was of a slightly heavier grams per square metre than standard paper as I wanted the small booklet to have a good durability level. This paper also worked well as it was an off white almost eggshell coloured paper and the pastel nature of this colour complimented the pastel pink used in the publication. I printed the booklet on a machine of which prints the publication for you and also folds the booklet for you of which is very appropriate for the publication I made as it is the exact sort of machine that would be used on somethings like my publication from a company of which is not massive and will only be making a very short run of the publication. I  also chose the use of colour I did and the choice of paper as due to thew fact that the paper is cheap and that the minimal use of colour and therefore ink and the use of stock colour to colour the background means the booklet has been kept as cheap to produce as I could making it appropriate for a publication of which wouldn't have a massive budget to spend on production like a skateboarding zine.

For this brief we were told that we had to decide on what the topic of which we would base our whole research around. We were set to task in looking at the options of which we could choose for the topic and at the end of the first week take our ideas into a crit in which we would pitch out ideas to a group of our peers and from the feedback we would decide which idea we were going to take into this research unit. From the first crit the group consensus was that I should take one idea forward, this idea was to base my research on my favourite skate films of all time. The whole unit it to revolve around the number 100, this is
based around the five areas of information of which totals together to total 100 pieces of information, to further this relation to 100 I decided to base my research around my favourite 100 skate videos of all time.

From these videos somehow I was meant to compile a body of research of which contained around 20 pieces of information from five different categories these categories were Facts, Opinions,Words, Statistics and Pictures.

Firstly for the opinions section I gave a group of my skate friends a list of the 100 skate videos and asked them for there input on the videos and asked them questions about said videos to spark there answers, the own answers were left completely up to themselves. Secondly I has to obtain facts and I did this by researching the internet and the articles for said skate videos for general skateboarding related facts and also fact related to the videos I had chosen. Thirdly I had to obtain statistics yet again I used the internet and read the related articles to obtain statistic on skateboarding in general and statistics about the videos. Penultimately I had to obtain a list of 20 words related to skate boarding, instead of picking these myself I decided that I would get these from the skateboarder friends too I did this by asking them one simple question "Describe what skate boarding means to you in one word?" and from their answers I took my information and finally for the picture I obtained the advertising material for the videos.

This information was then put into a form of presentation of my choice of which I chose appropriate for a two minute presentation and I decided that I believed that using a powerpoint to hold the whole content of my research and to read out when presenting the piece of information of which I viewed as the most important. Below are screenshots of the slides from my presentation to show how I presented It and to show the content of my research.
