OUGD405 Studio Brief 01 - Design Process - Frame (Photoshop)

Today we were briefed on the first studio brief go this module (OUGD405) and I was excited to see what this would be, the brief was…

Studio Brief
Re-imagine the backing paper for a photo frame. This must include the dimensions of the frame. You must produce a minimum of three designs, which work as a set across three different frame sizes. Choose from the frame dimensions below:
6x4 inches - 7x5 inches - 8x6 inches
A5 - A4 - A3
The concept of your design should be shape, you can interpret this as a literal shape e.g. circle, sphere, triangle, square, box etc or be more imaginative. Consider how you frame your shape, be creative with your manipulations and compositions. Consider how to engage the audience and the target market of your photoframe. For example a Wilkinsons photoframe would be packaged and designed with a different aesthetic to a Harvey Nicholls frame.
All typography and vector based images must be produced in Adobe Illustrator. Any images must be manipulated in Adobe Photoshop. The final composition must be produced in Adobe Photoshop.
Background / Considerations
Explore a range of concepts in your research and development of your own ideas. Consider the usage, functionality and display within commercial outlets when resolving this problem.
Not all your investigations should take place on the Mac. Digital image capture methods such as scanning and digital photography allow you to import media from a range of sources (photographs, photocopies, drawings, tracings, found material etc.)
Once you have imported this material how can you manipulate using the tools and capabilities of Photoshop (cropping, selecting, layering, repeating, colour changes, reversing out etc.)
Mandatory Requirements
In preparation for the second session you must have photographed a selection of images to work with.
The frame backing papers must exist as part of a set/series and must include the frame dimensions.

Deliverables

A quantity of visual investigation/research.
Developmental work in sketchbooks/worksheets.
Three frame backing papers designed and mocked up in a photo frame.
Minimum of 4 design boards, presenting and discussing the following:
Research
Initial designs
Design choices (colour, format, type, layout)
Final design

As the initial stage I decided that I would look at some photo frames that are already on the market as a form of research for this unit.

Above are a selection of six photo frames that I looked at from retailers that sell photo frames for different markets and for a range of uses. The selection of frames includes frames from different high street retailers such as Debenhams and John Lewis, photo frames that are from retailers of which concentrate on products for the low priced market and finally specialist frames of which are designed for a special purpose or occasion.Firstly from the first four images I grasped that the majority of standard photo photo frames due to the fact that they are aimed at an older any range for the target audience and furthermore that they are aimed predominately at older females too that they are mostly designed with an over all classy aesthetic to them and also a somewhat feminine look to them, none of the designs that I saw were suitable to be targeted at a younger audience of which added interest for me as I wanted to design something of which could be targeted at a audience of potential customers of which wouldn't be the obvious choice of people who would usually buy photo frames. From looking the fifth picture above I also found out that another way of aiming my designs at a more specialised market could be achieved by creating a specialised frame of which would be used as a commemoration of something for a specific purpose. Finally when looking at the Wilkinsons photo frame I decided that the finally accentuate the fact the frame I was to design was going to be aimed at a smaller target market by making it a frame of which would be in the upper price range of which you would expect to pay for a photo frame I did not want to do this by creating designs for the backing frame of which would apply to the usual cliche upper class photo frame design but by creating designs of which incorporates a classy expensive feel to them but also being alternative and still in-keeping with trendy fashionable younger aesthetic.

My understanding of the brief is that we were to design three photo frames of different sizes these could either be a set of three of which are 6 x 4", 7 x 5" and 8 x 6" or a set of three of which are A3, A4 and A5. The focus of the designs must take into consideration use of shape in the creation and then the use of layout in the design and things like negative space and how it can be used, a overall detailed though process surrounding the layout and at first this didn't sound very exciting to me and at this point I wasn't really as certain what was being asked of me as I didn't really see the relevance of designing the backing paper of a photo frame as to me this is surely an unimportant part to the frame but none the less I set out with researching and began the initial development stage.

To start off my designing stage as a form of research I created a mind map of which used to outline my ideas and furthermore to identify the starting point go my final design. As a starting point I decided to create a mind map spanning from the possible target audiences that I could make a photo frame for and therefore I could design the backing paper for the frame. The three main audiences I identified was children, youths around the age range of 16- 25 and finally adults.

The First Idea that I had was creating a specialised photo frame for the adult audience and therefore photo frame backing paper of which would be for frames of which encompass four photos and are designed in a way that they would be used to commemorate something or an occasion. This idea would only work when linked to special occasions where it can be summed up in four letter words. This added a slight limitation to the potential of these idea but also added the fact that the nature of the was this style aims itself at a specific target market. I decided that the holes in which the pictures would be seen through of which were the letters that they would have to be big block letters so that the image can be seen clearly through the holes and therefore I came up with the design above.

For this idea that would be aimed at the youth audience I wanted to gain my inspiration from the art of tattooing. I decided I would design these ideas for the backing papers in both a vintage and modern style so therefore I decided to combine the old american style tattoo's with modern geometric style designs. From the old vintage style I decided to create a set of very iconic vintage symbols of which were mexican sugar skulls but instead of designing them in a vintage style I decided to adapt my designs with the modern tattoo styles as the features of the skulls. I started trying out different geometric patters that I could use and started putting them on the skulls I had drawn. I also drew out some alternative geometric pattern I could use.

The next idea I designed was one to be aimed at children. I started to brainstorm ideas of which I could use to appeal to children and finally decided to use images from disney to attract the children. I decided to create set of designs of which I incorporated disney characters into the designs, as I didn't want the images to be overpowering and just be simplistic I decided and added blacked out silhouettes of disney characters and In which I added the dimensions in white.

jFor the final idea I decided I would design another set of designs of which were aimed at the biggest target market that buy photoframes of which is the adult market. I decided that I would create a series of frames of which would also be aimed at older women. These frames were designed to still be fitting with the styles of frames on the market today but also added a little extra something to make them different and stand above. For the content of the backing frame papers I decided to add inspirational and heartwarming phrases of which I thought would attract my target audience such as "Fill this frame with something that you love" and incorporated these slogans into the classily designed surroundings of the backing paper in a script font to add an overall sense of elegance.

After assessing all the idea options in the interim crit that we had and after having gained back the views of my peers I decided that I wanted to go with a design idea of which would be aimed at a specific target market and everybody's favourite idea that I would take forward the tattoo based designs to the next stop. As in the brief I was told I had to create three different size frames I decided I would do a three part set of sugar skull based designs. I then scanned in the drawn versions of the skulls and then digitised them in illustrator. I did this by using the pen tool to recreate the drawn lines at a set designated stroke point by drawing on a new layer over the scanned image layer. After a while of doing this I ended up with the fully recreated images from illustrator and the next stage of the process was to transfer the vectors into a photoshop document of which would be where the final composition would be put together, I did this as this is what was asked in the brief. I also transferred a black border created in illustrator into photoshop, these aspects transferred into photoshop from illustrator were kept as smart objects so that they would remain vectors and not turn into pixels. The final decision I had to make about the design was mostly final composition decisions such as placement of the skull feature and then choice, position and size of accompanying text. To be en-keeping with the whole overall geometric and symmetrical feel to the work I decided that for aesthetic reasons It would be best to keep the skull centralised to further add to the sense of symmetry. Secondly for the font choice I decided to use Helvetica Neue Ultra Light as this went well with the use of the intricate nature of the designs and the thin nature if the pen strokes. Finally I decided to make the text quite big in context to the frame as I believe in a photo frame backing paper the definition need to take a prominent part in the design as it is a crucial part of the design.

Above is an image of the final three printed designs. I presented these final designs in the final crit for the unit and the overall sense from the group of my peers as the the elements of my design all came together to create a full package of what they believed aesthetically worked very well. It was suggested that the fact that the nature of the design has a somewhat classy and alternative sense to it that It would be perfectly in place being sold in a shop such as Urban Outfitters and therefore this means I achieved what I originally planned by wanting to create the design for a frame of which would be targeted at a more specialist market.
