OUGD403 Study Task 3 Briefing

Task
Within your group research your provided story and make design decisions informed by the impact, the tone of voice, the word count, etc.

Plan the layout, composition, colour, typography, etc.
Research into opinions and facts will help inform your design decisions and direction you take with this task.

There are no limitations on how you produce this, but you should aim to start the process hand rendered,
For this study task we were split up into groups and given at random an article. We were then told that we were to research the article and then evaluate different styles of newspaper and other related article styles we could present this article in. The group started out brainstorming ideas and then split up into people doing different tasks. After the discussion between the group where we discussed what article styles we should try for this task, we also discussed all the other components that would be an important part of these styles like font size, font style and other things like image to text ratio. Others from the group printed out examples of the styles of the article and made general grids from existing examples of articles.
While some of the group went and made a presentation on powerpoint to present on the ideas we had for the content of our articles I set out to make an example of one of the article styles.

In the end we would evaluate our articles in three styles one of which is evident in a style similar to the Independent, the second in a glossy high quality magazine style like Matt Willey's article in Elephant Magazine and finally in a very contrasting style to see what it is like so we decided to look at one in the style of the Sun newspaper. We did the third as we thought it would be good to evaluate a style of which we thought wouldn't work such as a tabloid style and then we could rule it out when it wasn't appropriate. As we looked at the tabloid style with high picture to text ratio we decided due to the serious nature of the article and the need for information that comes from this seriousness that it wasn't an appropriate style to use and therefore ruled it out.

Out of the final two ideas we decided that our favourite was in the style of the glossy magazine and therefore I mocked up a example draft of out article with random text so that we could have a look at our article in the style of the glossy magazine. The first three designs are our mock ups where we found the gird from an existing article design and then the last image is our digital mock up of our favourite design.

After this we had a crit with another group of which we presented out ideas and then give us feedback on our ideas. After we presented out ideas to the other group they gave us very positive feedback they said that the style of article design was a really good style due to the fact that it reflected the serious nature of the article. They said the style of graphics and the way they are used add a high impact edge to the article and finally they said the way we looked into a range of article styles to see which is best and even include ones of which we can evaluate to then rule them out is a very good way to find the appropriate way to display a message.
