OUGD505 - SB2 - Design Decisions - Hierarchy Of Type

Due to the fact that to ensure that simplicity is consistent throughout the book the decision had been made to use only a single typeface it was necessary to ensure that hierarchies through the typography are implemented to help with outlining important importation, and create a flow of importance through the document. Due to the fact that only a single typeface was going to be used, this hierarchy within the design will be constructed through type sizes and the use of the who font family, the ensure there is a strict hierarchy through the design, adding to the desired structured aesthetic.

The first method that is employed though the design stage is type sizes, the varying type sizes give added emphasis to aspects of importance, flowing down from biggest to smallest type size. Implementing a simple Heading, Sub Heading, Additional Info, Body Copy hierarchy implemented within a lot of editorial design. This help readability for the audience as it helps the reader structure the text by importance without thinking about it. Finally it ensures a consistent and professional look, adding to the ordered modernist aesthetic desired.

Another method of which was used to implement a hierarchy within the design was the use of the whole font family with the work. Having access to the full font family means that bold and black variants could be used to add emphasis to important aspects, such as the writers name in the example below. It finally also allowed for me to outline different pieces of information as different to the rest in a hierarchy sense as the inclusion of italics within quotes helped it distinguish them from the main body copy.
