OUGD505 - SB2 - Aesthetic Research - Ego Trip Magazine

The first of the aspects of aesthetic research that will be looked at is a magazine publication that similarly to my project has its whole content featured around the world of Hip-Hop music and everything it entails. It is important to start by looking at this as it will outline what magazines of the golden era for Hip-Hop looked like at that time during the 1990's. Due to the content of the publication being a contrast of an intricate, structured, clean and modern aesthetic to represent the new commercial side to Hip-Hop while still paying homage to the gritty, chaotic and underground aesthetic of the 1990's magazines, in an almost comparative state linking with the concept of the zine. By looking at this magazine of old as a starting point it has allowed me to understand the styling and attributes of the vintage magazines so that it enables me to take in forward in to the design stage a long side the modern aesthetic.

The first immediate design aesthetic that comes from the artwork is the importance of colour, in a world of 'Bling' and 'Flashiness' this bright and vibrant aesthetic represents the music and the scene perfectly. The magazines are comprised very much photographically in layout, they have a major concentration on imagery and photography, with little added design attributes such as minor illustrations and a heavy importance on typography. In Hip-hop magazines, photography speaks for itself.
