Another point of aesthetic research for this project was to look at a fine artist by the name of Jean Michel Basquiat. The inspiration behind looking in to Basquiat is for inspiration for the design aesthetic of the final publication resolution. As I am trying to pay homage to both the old and modern side Hip-Hop through the publication it is necessary for me to include attributes in the design from this older era, and this will be represented as graffiti through the design. Jean Michel Basquiat started off as a Graffiti Artist in a Downtown Manhattan graffiti collective by the name of SAMO in late 1970's/early1980's New York. Through his graffiti Basquiat employs a neo-expressionist art style that pays cultural reference to his african roots that is deeply laden with ethical and social issues very much acting as his muse. His work often encapsulating a push back against oppression, commercialism and poverty of which made it very relatable to the Hip-Hop culture and this link made his work, and Hip-Hop music come hand in hand. Leading to a large rise of interest in him within the Hip-Hop world.
