OUGD504 Studio Brief 02 - Environmental Research

The final piece of research will be in to the environmental and nature friendly side to Tratar bikes and looking at these ethos' conveyed through design to help show how these can be translated in design and eventually taken in by the target audience, It is very important to partake in research in to this as one of Tratar bikes' main unique selling points is how eco-friendly the company is and how much they help they're local community as they say and I quote "The production of the bike leaves the lightest environmental footprint possible: top quality Slovenian wood is glued together with biodegradable glue and all the parts are assembled by hand in Slovenia" and so displaying this in order to attract the attention of prospective customers is a needs must through the logo in some way, whether this be in the logo itself, the application of the logo or even through the type used in the logo.


The first example is a display of a Logo for a cycle centre of which is eco-friendly in the way that I uses all recycled products in which the designer has tried to add emphasis to that fact that the company is environmentally friendly but I don't think that this has been effective as they have used all of the cliche additions you can use in a design the use of the obviously light leaf green and furthermore the use of arrow iconography to symbolise a cycle but rather than help the logo to display this, It has instead hindered the logo as the additions have made the logo become tacky rather than worth notoriety, and so I will aim to leave the cliche attributes behind me and go for a more subtle approach.



The next example is a company called Fijn Cosmetics that make a range of "high-end line of Eco-friendly beauty products made of 100% natural ingredients derived from the indigenous tropical flora of Suriname" and this makes them a company that will have to be looked closely at in how they have portrayed their company morality through the design of their logo. Even though there aren't typically in the same market as Tratar bikes it is still relevant to look at them for research as similarly to Tratar they sit in a very crowded global market with endless competitors but stand out from the rest because of their eco-friendly unique selling point, and this is something that Tratar must harness to gain in popularity.
Unlike the last logo I looked at where the designer went overboard with the obvious references to the eco-friendliness the design of the Fijn logo had in my eyes manages to achieve a much better outcome as in the logo instead of adding very obvious observations they have stripped the logo down to a very simple sleek logo and instead have added the eco-friendly feel by instead using subtle additions to elude to the eco background such as the subtle earthy tones like green and brown and the simple leaf motif. This enables the design to stay effective in displaying the companies ethos' but also simultaneously looking professional while doing it.



This next example is another company that I found on which has a massive emphasis on the its eco-friendliness and carbon footprint as they use recycled materials for the product itself but also all the materials used in shipping making the whole product 100% recycled. The packaging box that the product is sold in is also especially eco-friendly itself as the box was designed as a no glue needed folding flatpack design eliminating the use of clue and the packaging was design so that whether it is any of the three sizes of the cup the box net can be broken down and reassembled to fit any size of the cup in it with adjustable supports keeping the product safe in delivery meaning the company only has to keep one size of packaging box and therefore minimising waste.
This is a great example of research in to eco-friendly based companies to look at for inspiration ad not only through the design they convey the message of their ethos very effectively through the use of friendly and warming typography and illustration to create the essence of a company that cares. This combined with the massive effort into not only the branding but the whole packaging of the product and this is something necessary in setting certain products parts from the rest and so these are two very big things I will definitely be taking forward in to my final product decisions.



As the two design decision that I have looked at prior to this have been examples where either a large stock picture combined typography or hand rendered type and illustration and therefore both very busy it was time to look at an example of design of which includes the sense of eco-friendliness but by doing it very subtlety. It does this through the inclusion of a subtle green colour, not to in the viewers face like the first example where the design became cliche but still with obvious links to the environment. The small inclusion of a simple typography (even though it is Japanese  and a simple hand rendered illustration and it all comes together to create a homely and rustic yet simple and effective branding something crucial for a company trying to portray their environmental side.


The last thing that needs to be definitely thought about is the packaging and colour choices used in products and branding that convey the products environmental nature and this is that the colour choices in the packaging usually include one sole number, sometime two and these usually include earthy tones to give links to the natural side such as green and brown shades. This limited nature of colours used in the packaging is usually because of the fact that they tend to use packaging that comes in shade of brown to elude to the nature aspect. This is important in the designing stage to consider as this can effect the design itself and furthermore important as can set apart the product from the rest of the market, as people that are interested in buying a eco-friendly product don't want to receive that product in bleach and unrecycled packaging it doesn't show consistency in brand ethos'.
