As the first three units
consisted of briefs that included a physical printed deliverable for the final
outcome it was now time for a unit that consisted of something a little
different. This unit tasked us to decide
on an artist of our choice that is releasing brand new album be this a factual
or fictional album release and then for this album we would have to create the
design of an album launch promotional website of which would be up three to
four weeks before and after the album release. The sole purpose of this
promotional website is to gain attraction of new followers to the band in
question and ultimately boost album sales and popularity.
This brief was also a
perfect brief to end the module on as the production considerations that the
module revolves around were still applicable but not in a physical
circumstances but the consideration that are important in the world of web
design and as this is something that I would say is my weakest skill as a
designer a detailed look in to web design is exactly what I need to develop my
skill sets.
The choice being left down
to us allowed me to chose an artist in which I have a lot of interest and so
therefore it allows me to design in a style that I enjoy meaning that when I
began the designing stage I myself are the perfect example of target market
giving me a first hand experience with what the audience want from the design.
This was helped as well by the fact that during the unit we were given a
workshop on UXD and this helped me in designing in relation with what is wanted
by the target market. This also was translated in the research segment of the
unit as the concentration of research was taken about album campaign websites
and this was something I found as very easy due to my interest in the music
industry and furthermore interesting how important it has become to make
websites user-friendly and user-experienced and this was a side to my design I
need to develop.
Conceptually the idea of
my design was very strong as it surrounded itself around a 20 year anniversary
rerelease of a 1990’s Wu Tang Clan album and the whole point was to revitalize
the aesthetic of the album in the redesign and increase sale from existing fans
only to gaining new followers through a revitalized modern aesthetic. This
allowed me to bring the album from the past back in to the modern day.
Due to fact that I was
totally inexperienced with wed design I didn’t quite realize to what extent that
different considerations had to be taken in to context when designing for web.
These considerations include the use of wire framing as the initial design
stage, web ready fonts, translation of the website between different computer
sizes and most importantly the developing and conversion between different
viewing platforms such as computers, tablets and mobile phones. This unit was
brilliant for me as it helped me develop a side of my design I see as being vey
weak to what I can see from the result as actually quite a strong skill I now
have.
