To start us off with this brief of the module we were set a study task in which we would make the initial steps for the brief and would get us on our way!
Firstly before we were set off on the study task we were shown through a powerpoint of which would help us by getting us thinking about the work we are about to do and further more about some considerations that were would have to take into context during this brief..
The powerpoint began by proposing the question what is the difference between a logo and a brand/branding? This was a good start as this is a question in design of which while quite similar there are actually some major differences between the two, a logo is a graphic of which is used to signify the company/product/business where as a brand/branding is actually not only the logo but along with this refers to the identity of the brand including mentality and everything else we associate with company/product branding revolves around the overall look of which is given off. It also helped me to outline the three main different type of logo; a logo type which is a logo comprised of only type; an iconic style of which uses only a graphic accompanied by no type and finally a combination mark of which is a mix of both a graphic and type.
We then next moved on from terminology and understanding of the topic to then begin to think about some contextual sides to logos. We began to look at colours used in logos and if these are used so that the consumer perceives a certain feeling from these colours e.g. barbie using pink to add the girly essence to the brand and starbucks using green to add a perceived sense of eco-friendliness. Finally another thing that I drew from the powerpoint was how important the use of type is and the message that is delivered subconsciously through the chosen typeface.
I decided to then begin with the next stage of the study task of which was to choose which Kickstarter project that I would decide to create a logo for. After a duration of looking through the website I decided that I would pick not only a Kickstarter project of which doesn't already have an existing professional logo of which I believe accurately represents the product/service but also a project of which I have some actual interest in as in my eyes if I have an interest in I will be able to be more informed and therefore create a better logo. I eventually decided to create a logo for the Kickstarter adventure below of which is to make road bikes but with hand carved wooden frames.
I went to the website of the manufacturer of the wooden frame bicycles and we greeted by their mission statement of which I believe was the best initial piece of information of which I could use to depict the ethics and values of the company. All of the information pointed towards one main fact that could be summed up by one statement; An even balance of Form and Function with the product! "We believe that the city ride is not just about getting from point A to point B, but more about appreciating the journey. We believe our wooden bikes will give riders a comfortable and luxurious experience. The ride with out bikes is smooth and always recognised, wherever you are."
Below
I decided that although the mission statement does give me an insight into the brand because of the fact that It in a very short-winded way sums up the company as a whole that I would have to gain some further research so that I can make my knowledge and understanding of the company deeper. To achieve this I decided to download the press release kit for the bike used as advertising purposes before the bike goes into a bigger manufacture stage.
From the press release kit Learnt a few major things about the company. The first of the things that I learnt was that they were very heavily based on functionality and the fact that the bike had to function as a high standard quality bike, with a lot of effort and attention put into the designing stage of the bike and certain specifics like the weight of the bike being as light as they possibly could be and a lot of work into the ergonomics of the product related tot he shape of it so that It rides to its full potential. This is then coupled majorly with the fact that a long side this need for functionality there was also a massive effort put into the aesthetics of the bike ensuring that while being functional it is also had to be attractive and stylish for the consumer. With extra efforts put into such specifics as the shape design of the wooden frame of the bike all the way to the final manufacture being perfect with things like the wood of the bike being made from a high quality durable and attractive Slovenian wood. The combination of these two aspects coming together to create exactly what the manufacturer was looking for; a satisfying ride all round.
Some other aspects of which I was able to gather from the press release were firstly that the company intentions even though only a start up company have been able to achieve a goal of theirs by taking the product international right from the start as the help to begin the business venture through donations were donated from all around the world, generating international interest.
Also I was able to gather that the manufacturer has a high level of morality value due to the fact that they say an opportunity in using a type of Slovenian wood of which would be perfect with the bike and doing this knowingly to combat a problem of unemployment of which is going on in Slovenia
Furthermore I gathered that company has a high moral station on eco-friendliness from the fact that in the press kit they talk about the fact that are proud of the ecological side to the business. "The production of the bike leaves the lightest environmental footprint possible: top quality Slovenian wood is glued together with biodegradable glue and all the parts are assembled by hand in Slovenia"
Finally another things that I found from the press kit is that the development of the bike and the company itself all stems from a family of which generations of the family have worked on it, meaning the company gives of an aura that it is a family run family orientated company.
During the research into the company I stumbled across the existing logo for the company that will I will be ultimately redesigning and in context to the above mentioned aspects of the company I don't believe the logo is an accurate representation of the company at all and does well enough represent the positives of the company.
Finally from the research into the company that I had done I had to outline the major consideration and requirements that I would have to display in the logo and here they are as follows;
Form
Functionality
Eco-friendliness
Handicraft
Through the research in to the company I have achieved to identify the first of the major sections of the research that I need to partake in as I have identified what I believe to be the the most important parts of the company's ethos and mission statement and now believe that I will be able to accurately represent what the company is about and display this through the logo.
